Safety Certificates

A Safety certificate will be required whenever you have sold a used vehicle to a customer.  If the vehicle is currently registered as a demo (to the dealership) then you will need a safety certificate to process the transfer to a customer, likewise if the vehicle is currently unregistered (or registered interstate), you will need one to register this vehicle to the customer.

It is important to remember that you don’t need to use a safety certificate when registering vehicles into the Dealerships name.

How long are they valid?

The validity of safety certificates vary depending on what it is being used for.

Transfer into a customers name

90 Days or 1000 klms (whichever comes first)

Registration into a customers name

60 Days or 2000 klms (whichever comes first)

The timeframe for which they are valid starts on the day that they are issued and expires on midnight on the day of expiry.

What do I do with it after I have used it?

The Blue copy must be included with your TRAILS filing for the transaction that it is used for, the other 2 copies are distributed to the customer and kept with ‘the deal’.
